Hey hi.
I've always been a fan of reading. When I picked up my first Enid Blyton book, which was a collection of short stories, around the age of 4 or 5, I remember being sucked into a whole new world of possibilities and endless dreams. It sounds really cliche, but I literally could not put the book down. When I was done with it, I immediately dragged my parents to the bookstore, if I remember correctly, it was MPH in the old One Utama building, and bought four more.
Ever since then, I've grown into an avid reader, and always had a book with me. I read so many books from Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings to Dan Brown. I read Goosebumps, Singapore's Ghost Stories, a bit manga and even classics like Robinson Crusoe and David Copperfield. Of course, I moved on to heavier reading and eventually slowed down, but the love for it never faded.
There was a span of a year or two, maybe more, when I didn't read much at all. Perhaps I didn't have the time or the initiative to get books. I read a bit here and there, such as the autobiography of Anthony Kiedis, a few Murakami novels and some Jodi Picoult. Picked up one Nicholas Sparks (I think it was Dear John) novel and didn't really like it, read Tom Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test for an assignment and Great Gatsby for literature. But recently, this ceasing flame has started to grow into a roaring fire. I can't seem to stop buying or wanting more books.
I guess it's because of my Creative Writing or American Literature class, or maybe it's the fact that I'm surrounded by other people who love reading too. I currently (and no, I'm not even kidding) have about 13 books in my room, waiting to be read. Johnathan Franzen, Haruki Murakami, my lecturer Bernice Chaulay's Growing up with Ghosts and a plenty of others. I made two more purchases today and I have run out of space in my room to put them.
Ok so is it even possible to read three books at the same time?! I'm currently reading Catcher and the Rye by JD Salinger for my American Lit class and the autobiography, but at the same time, I can't wait to start on Game of Thrones. Oh Lord this is worse than choosing a university, hahah.
Not to mention that Book Depository's 24 Hours of Book Offers is happening this Wednesday, and I'm still looking for a few items by Chuck Palahniuk and a few more classics. That site is amazing and I seriously recommend it to all book readers. If you can't find a book you want in Malaysia, or you're looking for different publishers, TBD offers free shipping to everywhere in the world and sometimes the prices can be even cheaper than locally :)
I know, I know. I'm broke. But hey, at least this time my money is going to something more productive and useful.. right?
Till the next post,
Au revoir.
The complete set of Game of Thrones by George RR Martin. This is an epic series & there's still two books in the writing! |
